Rhythm In Her Veins, Step Lightly
'God is one. When I pay obeisance through mudras, I'm imploring not just the Hindu Bhagvan but the supreme creator. It just happens that we call him by different names.' So says a young Muslim girl who excels in Bharatanatyam. Only to face mahallu's wrath
Interesting(Maybe, that is not the right choice of word, possibly ' Disstressing is a better choice)...to see such mindless objections being raised...that too to a dance form cause tha its considered belonging to a diff relegion...
That raises another interesting question...How come there is no art form that is supposedly considered as representing Islam??
Or is there any? but then, I wouldnt knw...

It is so sad that everything is seen with divisions and borders.
I do think there is no particular dance for muslims. If they didnt let their women show the faces, they probably never let them dance as well.
I think Qawali is the art form representing Islam. But, I am not sure if women are a part of it...
Actually in kerala when a muslim bride is getting ready for her marriage, everyone dances in a circle around her. It is called Opana. That has become huge form of dance in mainstream. Lot of kids perform Opana for school and other cultural activities these days
Anyone heard of belly-dancing ?
:-)
Thanu,
hmm yeah....but what is commendable is that her parents have continued supporting her...
and not bowed to those demands..
let me google on Opana

Not sure if Ive mentioned this before..
But there was this gp of american and middle eastern femmes at my school practicing belly dancing in one of the smaller rooms near our career services office in school..
I was walking past...when I saw someone doin one of those gorgeous steps...and I immediately forgot my job at hand..and started watching them...
3-4 mins, they cudnt stand it anymore..and it was something like..
Either u dance with us...or dont watch...lolz...was kinda funny..
I ended up with a arched back for a few days after that..
Kathak isnt a dance form that evolved among Muslims? Not sure ...
Sorry, its not. Kathak originated in Northern India as a form of dance for Lord Krishna etc and while Mughals reigned in india they adopted the dance form and influenced it a great deal. I had the idea that Kathak was a Mughal dance form.
Gingko, the belly dancer :-)
LOL@your arched back from belly dancing :))

Shilpa - hehehehe :-). Thanks for the evoking the imagery...lol!
Hmm, looks like ath can be twisted to suit any "cause"!
Dancing, of all the purposes it exists for definitely doesn't exist to market any religion. It's woeful that people are trying to trigger some controversy out of something that needs to be lauded for. Nice post. And a beautiful photograph.
Dude,
you are soo funny in your comments but sooo serious in your posts?!! :P
